CPCS card renewal: when cards expire and how to renew

A CPCS blue Competent Operator Card lasts five years and can be renewed. A red Trained Operator Card can't be renewed: each category lasts two years from the practical test, and the operator upgrades to a blue card by achieving the vocational qualification. This guide covers both cards and how to keep track.

How long does a CPCS card last?

The Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS), run by NOCN Group, has two operator cards. Its scheme booklet for operators sets out how long each one lasts.

Red Trained Operator Card

How long it lasts

Two years for each category, from the practical test date

What happens next

Not renewable. Upgrade to a blue card by achieving the vocational qualification (VQ)

Blue Competent Operator Card

How long it lasts

Five years

What happens next

Renewable, with applications from three months before it expires

Upgrading a red card, not renewing it

The red card is non-renewable, so operators move on to competence. To upgrade, CPCS asks for a Health, Safety and Environment test passed in the last two years and a VQ with the units for the category. A blue card is then issued for five years.

CPCS allows 12 months' grace after a red card category expires to upgrade it. An operator who is registered for the VQ can apply for a 12-month extension while they finish it. After the grace period, the operator re-enters the scheme by taking the CPCS tests again.

How to renew a CPCS blue card

Applications open three months before the card expires, and the renewed card runs for five years from the last expiry date. A blue card can still be renewed up to five years after it expires. After that, the operator re-enters the scheme.

To renew, CPCS asks for:

  • A Health, Safety and Environment test passed in the last two years
  • The CPCS Renewal CPD for the categories being renewed, an online course that replaced the renewal test
  • Proof of ongoing operating experience: a CPCS logbook, an on-site assessment or a CPCS practical test
  • The renewal application, online or on the F1/3 form

Checking a CPCS card

NOCN Group's online card checker confirms a CPCS card. A search needs two details, one of which must be the registration number or the National Insurance number. Record the result and the date you checked.

What to record for each plant operator

Keep one record per operator, so an upgrade or renewal is started before a category runs out rather than found on site.

  • Card colour, number and each category on it
  • The expiry date of each red card category, or of the blue card
  • The date the renewal application can go in, three months before a blue card expires
  • Health, Safety and Environment test date
  • VQ registration and achievement for red card holders
  • Renewal CPD, logbook and the date you last checked the card

How SkillProof helps

SkillProof records each operator's CPCS card as a training requirement with its expiry date, alongside CSCS cards, SMSTS and first aid, with a copy of the card as evidence. Training records, role requirements and evidence uploads are on every plan.

Starter shows basic due dates and sends standard automated training due and overdue email reminders. Growth adds configurable reminder schedules, recipients and templates, so a site manager hears before a card or category runs out.

SkillProof doesn't check the CPCS register, verify cards or run CPCS tests. The IPAF and PASMA guide covers access equipment cards, and the construction page shows how teams set requirements by role.

What if a CPCS blue card has expired?

It can still be renewed up to five years after it expires, as long as the operator meets the renewal requirements. After that, they re-enter the scheme.

Does SkillProof check CPCS cards?

No. SkillProof records cards, categories, expiry dates and the checks your team has made, and reminds you before renewals are due. Use NOCN Group's card checker to check a card.
